Community Values
The Community Values Project is a community initiative that has emerged from the Byron Social Forum.
Its purpose is to facilitate and promote the Byron Shire Community’s creation of a ‘Declaration of our Community’s Values’.
It is hoped that, in its ultimate form, the Declaration will represent a true collective expression of what’s imporant to the members of the Byron Shire Community.
The Project’s aim is also to facilitate the creation of a complementary document - one that, like interlocked fingers, connects the Community’s Values with performance indicators. These performance indicators will make clear the degree to which our political, economic and lifestyle choices mesh with our professed values and will also provide a way to monitor government and business accountability to the local community.
The Community Values Group - OPEN to everyone - meets every Thursday from 5:45 to 7:45 PM at the Byron Tourist Centre.
The Group has begun and hopes to diversify its means of promoting and facilitating the Community Values Project:
Through community media (Bay FM and local papers) Byron Social Forum column, Letters, CSAs
By promoting the community’s Open Dialogue of Values - everywhere from the dinner table to the work break, the classroom to the local NGO, council or business meeting. Spend a few minutes, go around the table, hear each other’s hearts and minds about what’s REALLY important to us.
By inviting the community to contribute to the online process for co-creating a Byron Shire ‘Declaration of Community Values’ - by going to www.upworldgov.org and participating at the Byron Shire level
By providing a collation of values statements from documents locally produced over the last few decades by government, business and the wider community. This document, entitled First Light Values, provides a list and web links to all references. Please click here to view or download.
